Walk is not just a coming-of-age story for our 16-yr old heroine, Hanai. It is also a story about the acceptance of death and the bond of family. Not believing that their parents have “walked away” and passed on because they are not yet elders, Hanai’s younger, 11-year-old brother disappears into the arctic wilderness; he is set to find them and bring them home. Hanai, having just lost her parents and still grappling with the loss of her childhood and newfound matriarch responsibilities is tasked with finding him. Her dreams of adventuring and exploring the world have come to a close, which she cannot quite grasp. At the same time, young Jahai is dealing with the denial of his parents’ deaths and the harsh climate just outside their comfy village. Lead by the spirits of past villagers in the form of Geeci, Hanai must find her brother and accept her newfound responsibilities while gaining a new appreciation for the importance of family. Jahai, lead to the truth of his parents’ deaths, must learn to morn his loss as well as trust and respect his sister.
